The BC Summer Swim Program.

Prepares intermediate-level swimmers for the Waikiki Rough Water Swim on Saturday, September 4, 2023 and the North Shore Swim Series (NSSS) of four races between June 10 and July 22, 2023.

      • Most of our swimmers participate in NSSS races, either competitively or just for fun. The program builds knowledge and confidence in the ocean, beginning with stroke technique, ocean swimming skills, and long endurance swims.
      • The 15-week program begins with workouts on Saturday, May 22, 2023.  Weekend workouts will parallel the five North Shore races, alternating weekend practice sessions on the course of the next race with the race itself the following weekend.
      • We will work with a range of intermediate-to-advanced swimmers, including confident pool swimmers who want to build their open ocean abilities, as well as established ocean racers. We all have a lot to gain from training together in a group, especially when it comes to safety.

There are 45 in-person workouts (three per week), beginning with the workout on Saturday, May 22, 2023, and concluding with the Waikiki Rough Water Swim on September 4, 2023.

Establish New Ability-Building Workouts

Establish New Ability-Building Workouts

In my opinion, the most difficult training problem occurs whenever one attempts to establish a new workout regimen. It’s a process of progressive adaptation that terminates a set of workouts that no longer build ability while substituting a new set which will build...

Optimizing Workout Effort

The Hard-Easy System (HES) is especially useful in addressing how to exert optimal workout efforts. The solution is the Holy Grail of endurance training. When I began writing How to Read Your Body in 1985, I knew that a workout was essentially effort and energy. Thus,...

Coach Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon in 1959I’ve written three books on the Hard-Easy System. Each was like a doctoral thesis of my understanding of the system at the time: How to Read Your Body (1986), Running by Feeling (1996), and 5K and 10K Training...

My First Foray into Coaching Marathoners

I started training marathoners in 1979 at the height of the running boom. I had run the mile under nationally famous Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon so I was arrogant enough to think I could train long distance runners. I was recently “retired” from seven...

Hitting the Wall in the Marathon

In 2009, 124 athletes from my BC Endurance marathon training finished the Honolulu Marathon. Of that number, 48% were slowing or crashing in the final seg-ment—from 30K to 42K. It was a hot year, but that wasn’t why they slowed or crashed. “Slowing” and “crashing” are...

How to Pace the Marathon without Crashing

Using GPS to Solve the Pacing Problem

There have been several technological breakthroughs during my coaching career. The first was the heart rate monitor, which gave an accurate and objective measure of exertion. The second was the GPS monitor, which gave an accurate measure of pace in real time. In my...

What’s a Realistic Marathon Goal Pace?

Previous articles in this series describe the best way to pace a marathon without a crashing slowdown. Certain principles stand out: do the first 10K at least three percent slower than a realistic goal pace. And do not be faster than one percent of that pace through...
